Shop for a Place to Live

The biggest single purchase most people make in their entire lives is their home. Numerous home-buying resources are available on the Internet, many of which provide mortgage rate information and—in many cases—direct access to mortgages online. Some of the more popular sites include the following:

  • Bankrate.com (www.bankrate.com). A loan-oriented site, offering mortgage loans, auto loans, personal loans, and relocation information.

  • Current Mortgage Information (www.hsh.com). Mortgage and consumer loan information and rates.

  • eRealty.com (www.erealty.com). Offering home buying and selling services in selected cities.

  • FSBO.com (www.fsbo.com). Lists of homes for sale by owners (FSBO) .

  • HomeFox.com (www.homefox.com). Home brokerage services for buying and selling residential and commercial real estate.

  • Homes.com (www.homes.com). A one-stop-shop for resale homes, apartments, and new-home builders.

  • HomeScape.com (www.homescape.com). A true “home” portal, offering access to residential real estate, apartments, new homes, moving services (via MovingCenter), and financing.

  • Homestore.com (www.homestore.com). A virtual portal for home-related activities, including homes for sale, apartments for rent, moving services, home improvement, lawn and garden, and more.

  • iHomeowner.com (www.ihomeowner.com). Information and services for home buying, selling, and moving.

  • iOwn (www.iown.com). This site lets you shop for and apply for a mortgage online, as well as find a real estate agent.

  • MSN HomeAdvisor (homeadvisor.msn.com). A full-service home-buying site, from Microsoft.

  • NewHomeNetwork.com (www.newhomenetwork.com). One of the largest sites for new home construction on the Web.

  • Quicken Loans (quickenloans.quicken.com). A full-service mortgage site, from Quicken.

  • RealHome.com (www.realhome.com). A highly rated resource for buying, financing, improving, and selling your home.

  • Realtor.com (www.realtor.com). As shown in Figure 21.9, the largest site for resale residential real estate on the Web, from the National Association of Realtors.
