Chapter 36. Online Photos and Graphics > Graphics from the Web

Graphics from the Web

If you need an image to add to your Web page, or to include in a presentation or report, or to use as wallpaper for your Windows desktop, the Web is a good place to look. There are literally hundreds of Web sites that offer drawings (called clip art) or photographs for downloading, either for free or for a minimal charge. You can use specialized image search engines to look for particular types of images across the entire Web, or go directly to large image archives and browse through their proprietary images. Both types of image sites are discussed next.

Caution

Many image files on the Web are copyrighted and cannot legally be used without payment for permission. Although it’s probably okay to download a graphics file for use on your personal computer, using graphics without permission for commercial use—for a newsletter or a public Web page, for example—is definitely illegal.
