Chapter 36. Online Photos and Graphics > Understanding Image Files

Understanding Image Files

The Web is an extremely graphic medium. Even the most rudimentary Web pages incorporate some type of graphics—buttons and menu bars, if not full-color pictures and backgrounds. To best use pictures online, Web designers have to know about file size and resolution and color density, and pick the format that has the aesthetic appeal and the fastest download time.

Many regular people use e-mail to send personal pictures to friends and family, or set up personal Web pages to show off their kids and hobbies—pictorially, of course. Again, knowing which file formats to use—and how to produce the best looking pictures in the smallest possible file size—is an important skill.
