Is It Legal?

The legality of copying someone else’s copyrighted intellectual property is one of the most important issues in the world of digital music. Of course, listeners have been copying prerecorded music (from the radio, from vinyl records, and from CDs) since the invention of the first reel-to-reel tape deck. But with the ability to make perfect (or near-perfect) digital copies—and then distribute those copies worldwide, via the Internet—the issue of music copying has taken on a new importance.
