Chapter 22. Online Auctions > Managing Your Auctions

Managing Your Auctions

If you do a lot of trading at eBay or other online auction sites, you know how much of a hassle it is to create complex ad listings, manage all your auctions, handle all the end-of-auction communications, and track payments and shipments. The solution is to automate some or all these activities with special auction management software and services.

These auction management programs and services typically start at the ad creation stage, walking you through the creation of fancy item listings (including photos and HTML enhancements) that can be posted either immediately or according to a predetermined schedule. The software or service then tracks the bidding on each item over the course of the auction, and automatically sends end-of-auction e-mails to winning bidders at auction end. Some of the services offer Web-based checkout for winning bidders, freeing you from having to manually enter names, addresses, and other shipping information for each buyer. In most cases you can print an invoice and shipping label with the click of a mouse, and have the program or service e-mail the buyer when payment is received and when the item is shipped. Most of these programs and services also automatically leave feedback when the transaction is successfully completed.
