Troubleshooting

Communicating via newsgroups, message boards, and mailing lists is typically a trouble-free experience. Aside from offending other members with your opinions and starting flame wars (see the “Netiquette” sidebar), about the only thing you have to worry about is protecting your privacy when posting publicly.

As you learned in Chapter 8, “Ensuring Privacy and Security,” one way that spammers build their mailing lists is by culling e-mail addresses from Usenet, message board, and mailing list postings. You can avoid ending up on multiple spam lists by not listing your real e-mail address in your postings, or by inserting a spam block (literally, the words SPAMBLOCK) into your e-mail address.
