Media Players

Just as there are three main standards for streaming media from three competing companies, there are also three media player programs from these same three companies. RealNetworks has its RealPlayer, Microsoft has its Windows Media Player, and Apple has its QuickTime Player, all discussed in the following sections.

The most fully featured of these players are RealPlayer and Windows Media Player. Both of these players can play both video and audio files, either from downloaded files or via streaming media; both offer easy-to-use Internet radio players for live audio Webcasts; and both can play back virtually all the popular audio and video formats. The QuickTime Player is more of a dedicated movie player, especially for QuickTime-format files.
