POP Versus HTTP E-mail

There are actually two different ways to send and receive e-mail via the Internet.

The traditional way to send and receive e-mail uses a protocol called the Post Office Protocol (POP). POP e-mail requires the use of a dedicated e-mail client program and— at the ISP level—separate e-mail servers to send and receive messages.
