How an Internet Connection Works

The first step towards surfing the Web is to establish a connection between your computer and the Internet. Depending on your individual circumstances, you can choose from several different types of connections, including

  • A dial-up connection, over normal phone lines, to an Internet service provider (ISP)

  • A broadband connection, at ultra-fast speeds, utilizing ISDN, DSL, digital cable, or satellite technology

  • A connection via a company or school local area network (LAN)

  • A wireless connection using a cellular phone or similar device
