Chapter 13. Chat > Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

IRC is the most problematic of the different types of chats available. At times the entire IRC network seems pieced together with chewing gum and baling wire, and there’s no customer support facility to help you out if you run into problems.

One of the most common problems with IRC is when the network splits. You’ve been involved in a split if you’ve ever been chatting and seen virtually everyone in a channel exit simultaneously. This is caused when an individual server on that particular IRC net loses contact with the rest of the network—often because of routine maintenance, or server overload (too many users).
