Chapter 13. Chat > Internet Relay Chat

Internet Relay Chat

Internet Relay Chat is kind of like Usenet, in that it’s a subset of the overall Internet. When you connect to an IRC network, you have access to tens of thousands of different chat channels, each dedicated to a specific topic—and after you’re in a channel, you can talk publicly with everybody else who is also currently in that channel. It’s also possible to hold private conversations with other users logged onto a specific IRC network; these conversations are not visible to other users.

How IRC Works

IRC runs on more than two dozen separate networks (nets) , all connected to the main Internet backbone. Each net has its own group of servers, based at various locations around the world.
