Misconfiguration

Just as earlier versions of the Unix operating systems were insecure out of the box, many wireless networking hardware components also come insecure out of the box. Although security features are available on the product, in many cases, the default settings for them are frequently turned off to allow the network to be up and running as soon as possible. The last thing the manufacturer wants is criticism that its product is hard to install. By turning off security controls, installation is that much easier. Users then frequently leave the equipment alone, unaware that existing security issues must be addressed.
