Government Involvement

Several laws are in the works or already in place that attempt to protect children in their online usage. The problem with these laws comes down to enforcement. The technologies needed for companies to follow the laws are not yet in place. Laws around the world are changing every day because of the changes brought on by the Internet.

Communications Decency Act

The U.S. Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 prohibited and punished the dissemination of material considered “indecent” or “patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards.” These general terms were not described and could be interpreted in various manners. The CDA was so broad that it could affect all online services and have damaging effects to a wide range of service providers.
