Eternal Vigilance Is the Price of Liberty

Privacy advocates and civil libertarians see the next few years as one of the most challenging to the privacy of individuals in the last decades. Many fear “two steps forward, three steps back” repercussions in the wake of the destruction of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, and the counter-attacks in Afghanistan. They worry that the civil liberty ground that has been hard-won in the last 20 years will be wiped out in the emotional response to these events.

Perhaps the best lesson we can learn from considering privacy and its future issues comes from network designer Chet Johnson, who muses that this issue has been with us even before the invention of intrusive technologies:
