Chapter 17. WHERE ARE WE GOING? > Technology Helps and Hurts

Technology Helps and Hurts

All through this book we've talked about technology and its effect on privacy—either to aid in the collection of information or protect against inappropriate use. In this section we discuss some potential changes in technology—either privacy enhancing (PET) or privacy threatening.

In general, we're in a transition period for technology. Laws are changing. Security products (VPNs, firewalls, antivirus software, and digital certificates) are maturing and becoming more useful, but technology designed specifically with privacy protection in mind is still in the early stages. Technology for capturing data, storing it, and analyzing it is maturing at a faster rate than PET.
