Chapter 2. WHAT IS PRIVACY IN A DIGITAL ... > Finally, It Comes Down to Control

Finally, It Comes Down to Control

“…individuals, groups, or institutions have the right to control, edit, manage, and delete information about themselves and decide when, how, and to extent that information is communicated to others.”

Dr. Alan Westin, Privacy & Freedom

Dr. Westin's definition of privacy is the one that many online businesses, privacy advocacy groups, and governments have used when deciding on fair information practices. Westin takes Brandeis' description and applies it to the life of the average person who interacts with business or online sites, by describing exactly what management of one's own information means. In the next section of this chapter, “Fair Information Practices Protect Your Rights,” those fair information practices are described.
