Chapter 4. THREATS TO YOUR CHILDREN'S PR... > Discover Your Resources and Options

Discover Your Resources and Options

There are a lot of resources out there to help you. Specific laws regulate what information can be collected from kids, and you have recourse for complaints. Of course, the best way is to not have problems in the first place, and that means finding out what to look out for. First, let's talk about some sites that give you general information and help educate your kids.

SafeKids, by Nickelodeon and Larry Magid

As you can see from Figure 4.7, SafeKids (http://www.safekids.com/) is a very good site for kids to cruise by themselves. The Nickelodeon people have used their skill at making things bright and interesting to kids of many ages. One of the best things for kids is an interactive quiz about online behavior. You can see it in Figure 4.8. The questions and answers are not complex, but kids learn a lot, and many of the answers point kids to have conversations with their parents about the issues. The quiz helps kids understand how seemingly innocent actions can affect their safety online. There is also an excellent list of rules to help kids protect themselves online.
