What Are the Risks?

When evaluating risks on the Internet, it is important to keep a sense of balance and reality. Although we hear horrible stories about kids being lured to meet molesters, or being used for kid pornography, it's important to remember that those kinds of events are rare. Your kid is more likely to have an online encounter with rude or nasty people; receive e-mail from someone trying to sell something or promoting some sort of “get rich quick” scheme; or view pornography or get manipulated into downloading a game or program that doesn't live up to the advertising.

However, there are real dangers out there. We consulted with Parry Aftab, Executive Director of Cyberangels (http://www.cyberangels.com/). She is also the author of The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace , and helped the FTC write many of the guidelines about children's privacy protection.
