Using e-mail on the Internet has two principal privacy issues: keeping your identity anonymous and keeping the content of your messages private.

Keeping Your Identity Anonymous

At times it is advantageous to keep your identity anonymous. For example, to avoid repercussions, people sometimes don't want to have their name associated with a particular piece of information or critique. In a country governed by an oppressive government, anonymity helps to give people some freedom of expression. Using a pseudo-anonymous account, or one where you can get the information but it doesn't point directly at you, can help with managing spamming.
