Some Key Concepts

The following list of terms and concepts are important for you to understand if you want to make good decisions about protecting yourself and your computer. Some of them build on one another and are important to this chapter. Some you will also encounter in privacy policies or discussions.

Access Control

Access control is the practice of limiting access to those people you want to have the ability to see the information, and keeping others out. In non-computer terms, the locks on your house would be access control mechanisms. Only those with a key could come in. Some systems divide data into several classification levels, with differing access controls on each level. Simple access control mechanisms are passwords or Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
