Our Conclusions?

A lot of information is floating around that can be obtained by almost anyone on almost any pretext for not very much money. Some of it might even be accurate. More information is undoubtedly available to the licensed private investigator and to law enforcement agents and other government personnel. You don't have to be contemplating subversive or illegal activities to wonder whether there isn't too much information about you too widely available. You may want to keep information about yourself more closely guarded, but if you own property, keep credit accounts, or list a telephone number, it seems difficult to completely disappear.

For the most part, most of us don't want to disappear. Our public personas—the things that are known about us in the world—help us do business and interact with organizations and companies. What we need to do is learn how to control what goes out about us, and what to do if it does. Keep reading.
