Chapter 15. SELF-REGULATION AND PRIVACY > What Self-Regulation Is and How It Wo...

What Self-Regulation Is and How It Works

Self-regulation is the development and enforcement of rules within a community that protects the community from being ruled by outsiders. Self-regulation is more complicated, of course, than a single home improvement project, no matter how complex the project. The self- regulators must be strong enough to deter wrong-doers and yet reach out to newcomers to encourage them to learn and obey the rules. Probably the most difficult part of this idea is coming up with rules that the group can agree upon.

Self-regulation is like a group of children playing hide and seek or some other neighborhood or schoolyard game. They all agree on the rules and if someone cheats, they've already decided that the cheater is excluded from the game, doing a distasteful task that helps the group, or taking some other punishment that the group agrees matches the crime.
