Be Your Own Advocate

The job of the advocate is to, (ahem) advocate. Advocacy is the act of representing a point of view. An advocate will be more successful, of course, if the points of view are presented clearly, with good documentation, representing a clear constituency, and some sort of positive message. It doesn't really help if you just say “no” without any alternatives.

Many different kinds of successful advocates are in Washington. When people disagree with the points the advocates are making, the advocates get termed special interests. However, all interests are equally special, and most members of the House and Senate are willing to discuss matters of interest to their constituents, but they can't read minds. We have frequently overheard someone decrying the fact that “those idiots in Washington” are doing something with which the speaker disagrees.
