What U.S. Federal Law Applies

Many United States Federal laws are designed to protect individual privacy. Some are (or will be) applicable in the digital environment. Some won't. The following are some for you to think about.

Cable Communications Policy Act (1984)

This law (47 USC 551) provides cable services subscribers with the right to be informed about the collection of personal data. This is an Opt-in law, requiring prior consent of the subscriber to the collection of data. The cable service provider may not share or disclose any data collected. The government may obtain a copy of the data about a subscriber with a court order.
