Tracking Your Invisibly

Another weapon in the arsenal of those who want to know more about what we are doing is the small image from a third-party server that is embedded in a page in a way we aren't intended to notice. These little files are called variously Web-bugs, Web-beacons, 1-pixel-gifs, clear-gifs, or traffic-log cookies.

These very little files can carry the same information to a Web log that a full Web page does. Web transmissions need not be large to have cookies attached to them. So these unnoticeable files can track us across the Web without our knowledge. Again, combined with information from the Web logs, it might be possible for determined people to identify who we are and where we live.
