Defensive Internet Travels

When we drive a car on the highway, we are supposed to have a driver's license, issued by our state government. This process assures us that those who are steering potentially lethal vehicles have a minimum level of competence that was measured and certified. The places where we refuel are carefully inspected to make sure they are safe and that the fuel we purchase is the appropriate grade and measured fairly. The public roads are designed and built according to safe standards. Our governments change the standards as more information becomes available about improving the engineering of roads and bridges. Where we live in California, many of the state's overpasses and bridges have been structurally improved based on the feedback from what was and was not successful engineering for earthquake country.

Over time, our driver's license has come to be used to identify us. It has taken the place of the identity card used by other governments. When we travel by air these days, we are used to producing some sort of government-issued identity document for the airline personnel. Usually the document is a driver's license or a passport. This simple security measure helps to make sure that those who are traveling are those for whom the ticket was purchased.
