Glossary

Access control

Process of limiting Web site, network, or information access to authorized users, usually by means of security safeguards that detect and prevent unauthorized access. Portions of Web sites or information in databases can be classified into different levels and users are granted privileges to view those levels for which they are authorized. The use of user names and passwords or smart cards with PINs for specific sites or areas of sites are examples of access control.

Active Server Pages (ASP)

A proprietary technology from the Microsoft Corporation. They are a specification for Web pages that are created dynamically when the user clicks a link. Depending on what information is known about the user (either through fields that have been filled in or cookies that have been set), different information is displayed to the user. ASP uses ActiveX scripting, usually Visual Basic script or JavaScript. The acronym ASP can also refer to Applications Service Provider, a name used to describe companies that provide computing or networking application services for other businesses.
