Glitches Mean Tickets Tossed Out

Most computer-operated systems have bugs from time to time, and the stoplight camera systems are no different. One recent story illustrates the problem.

In May, 2001, the San Diego police dismissed more than 5,000 tickets issued through the red light system. The reason? The sensors buried in the pavement that help activate the system and measure the vehicle's speed had been moved, but the cameras hadn't been reprogrammed. That meant that all the tickets issued were suspect, because the math (see the explanation above) wouldn't work out the same way. It would be impossible to tell who had really run a red and who had not (Source: http://www.sacbee.com/news/news/old/local04_20010609.html).
