Stop or We'll Shoot (Your Picture, That Is)

The concept is simple enough: instead of having a policeman watch intersections where a lot of folks run red lights, use a sensor system with a camera. Take a picture of the license plate, and possibly of the offending driver as well, and send a ticket along with the picture to the registered owner of the car.

As you might guess, the system has its champions and its opponents. Local governments and law enforcement love them. An August 1, 2001 film story on Sacramento's local news station, Fox40 News, said that red light violations were down significantly—perhaps as much as 15%—since the red-light camera system was installed. Sacramento fines for red-light violations are in excess of $245. Signs such as the one shown in Figure 8.16 are prominently posted around the intersection.
