No More Waiting in Line—We'll Bill You

A few years ago, gas stations started offering to make your refill even faster, by putting credit card or ATM stations right on the gas pump. Technology is offering even more convenience, developing systems that enable you to pay without even having cash or your credit card with you—in some instances you can just drive by and pay.

Drive-By Toll Pay

Almost every state in the United States now has some kind of easy-pay toll system. These offer regular commuters the opportunity to just drive through the tollbooth, instead of having to stop and fumble for coins or cash. As your car goes through the gate, a radio transmitter in the booth sends a signal. One of those transponders discussed earlier, mounted on your car, responds with your unique identifier, and the toll system charges you the right amount. In most instances, driving through causes a charge to be made against an account you've already set up with the state. In some, when that account gets low, you can authorize the state to charge your credit card to fill it up again.
