EFF: Western Songs

What do activists want? They want you involved. As mentioned earlier in this chapter, the Internet makes an excellent information sharing and recruiting mechanism. One of the most effective, as well as one of the oldest organizations that wants you involved is EFF. It urges your support of its efforts to preserve civil liberties in the digital world.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (not the Electronic Freedom Foundation, even though that might have been a good name) is a non-Washington, D.C. organization. In 1994, a crisis of organizational philosophy split the organization and the philosophical heart (and the name) moved West to San Francisco. The folks led by Jerry Berman and Deirdre Mulligan stayed in Washington to fight from within as CDT (discussed earlier in the chapter). EFF moved out to be closer to more people who were building and experimenting with the medium itself. Although the split was hard, the individual Internet user benefited because over time, two strong organizations stood where only one stood before.
