Part IV: Sharing Knowledge > Sharing Knowledge with Remote Workers

Chapter 16. Sharing Knowledge with Remote Workers

Patricia Esack has taken on a special assignment to try and solve a key problem for Humongous Insurance—a major property and casualty insurer with offices throughout the United States and Europe. As the company has branched out, folks in Claims and Underwriting no longer talk to each other every day informally because they are no longer located near each other. To develop new lines of business, however, underwriting needs to come up with creative ideas that are tempered with the experience of senior claims adjusters.

Patricia has researched best practices in knowledge sharing, and wants to implement three initiatives to jump-start knowledge flow. First, she wants to bring together 100 of the key staff in Claims and Underwriting for a summit. Following that, she wants to create a volunteer group of approximately 30 people who will stay in touch regularly and share ideas. Simultaneously, she intends to create a group that will build on the work of the summit and to recommend at least three new insurance products to senior management. Because key players are scattered in offices throughout the country and a few of them work from home, she wants to utilize some of the new Web-based technologies that allow meetings, communities, and teams to be supported online.
