Chapter 16. Sharing Knowledge with Remot... > Creating the Electronic Workplace

Creating the Electronic Workplace

An electronic workplace can be defined as a Web-based environment that contains all the tools and processes required for workers to collaborate effectively, even if they are not co-located and are working in different time zones. It has several characteristics, including the following.

  • It is person-specific and job-specific, providing just the tools that each individual needs to do his or her job.

  • It provides a sense of place for groups of people, where the experience is of “coming to an office or conference room,” not “using an application.”

  • It supports the four principal activities of knowledge workers: finding information, organizing that information, creating knowledge, and sharing it with others.

  • It reaches beyond the enterprise to include partners and key customers as needed.
