Chapter 16. Sharing Knowledge with Remot... > Collaborating Using Microsoft ShareP...

Collaborating Using Microsoft SharePoint

Microsoft has created SharePoint as an entry into the online collaboration services market, with two offerings. SharePoint Team Services provides basic functionality for small work teams including document sharing, discussion forums, polls, customizable lists, and e-mail notification. SharePoint Portal Server provides a highly customizable collaboration environment suited for the large workgroup or enterprise, and is usually implemented by the IT department or an external solutions provider.

Table 16-2 outlines the differences in functionality between SharePoint Team Services and SharePoint Portal Server. Since SharePoint Portal Server is usually customized by professional developers, it is not discussed further in this book. However, if it appears to be a good solution for your company, you can get further information from Microsoft Corporation at http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/portalserver.asp.
