Chapter 8. Organizing Your Mobile Tools > Duplicating My Documents Folders

Duplicating My Documents Folders

Sometimes, you might want to duplicate the My Documents folder on your notebook and desktop rather than taking selected files or folders with you when you undock from the network. If you want to have the same My Documents structure on both computers, neither Briefcase nor Offline Folders will do. What you need is a synchronization utility. There are several to choose from, including FolderMatch (http://www.foldermatch.com), File-N-Sync (http://www.peersoftware.com), or Directory Toolkit (http://www. searchandreplace.com).

With Directory Toolkit, for example, as shown in Figure 8-7, you can see both the source and the target files. You have a number of synchronization options. The most common option is to update each folder with the latest version of all the files. If you do this before you undock your laptop from your network, you can be sure it contains all the files in My Documents (or whatever folder you specify).
