Chapter 5. Organizing Your Files > Enhance Your Performance with Fast Searching

Enhance Your Performance with Fast Searching

Fast Searching is a new feature in Office XP, replacing the Find Fast feature that was available in previous versions of Office. The advantage of Fast Searching is that it makes the search function more usable by returning results more quickly. On large searches, it can reduce the search time by 95 percent or more. You can also set Fast Searching to index your disk at specific intervals or only when your computer is not in use.

When you first use Fast Searching, Office builds an index file. This is a file that contains all the keywords of all the documents you have identified to be fast searched. The index file is approximately 15 percent to 30 percent of the size of the documents you are indexing, and can take an hour or more to create initially. To set Fast Search options, do the following.
