Building on Previous Work

For most knowledge workers, true value comes when you can leverage your existing knowledge for the organization by producing high-quality deliverables in a short amount of time. This is the sign of true mastery, when workers do a task quickly and confidently because they have done it countless times before and instinctively know the best way to accomplish it. One of the best ways to save time while creating knowledge with documents is to build on your previous work, and reuse the concepts, explanations, and supporting points that have worked well in the past.

There are several ways you can do this, ranging from the very simple to the somewhat sophisticated. It’s worth reviewing even the simple techniques, however, because it’s often the case that although you know how to do them, in practice you sometimes forget. The three ways you can build on existing work are covered in the following sections.
