Handling E-mail on the Road

E-mail doesn’t stop just because you’re on the road. There’s nothing more disconcerting than getting back from a week when you’ve been “unplugged,” and finding 500+ e-mail messages in your Inbox. Fortunately, there are several techniques you can use that will enable you to take care of your e-mail while you’re away from your desktop. Which one you use depends on how frequently you need to check your e-mail and what type of Internet access you’ll have. Some of the most frequent scenarios for mobile knowledge workers are shown in Table 8-1. The table also shows the best technology solution for each scenario; all solutions are discussed in the sections that follow.

  • Send/Receive Groups

  • Download Headers Only

  • You’re traveling and won’t be checking your e-mail until you get back, but want to manage your e-mail while you’re away.

  • Away From Office Rules

  • You work from two offices (for example, home and work), and need to synchronize your Outlook mail folders.

  • Synchronized Inboxes
