Reading Newsgroups

A newsgroup is a hierarchically ordered collection of messages that are posted on a computer called a news server. News servers can host thousands of public newsgroups or a selection of private ones. You can use a news reader such as Microsoft Outlook Express to subscribe to newsgroups of interest to you.

Note

Newsgroup messages are carried over Usenet—a network of news servers that predated the World Wide Web. Now, all public news servers are connected to the Internet, but you’ll still hear people talk about Usenet Newsgroups, because originally newsgroups were on a different network!
