Burrowing Through the Net with Gopher

Gopher was the first real attempt to make the Net easier to use, and it worked—but not as well as the Web, which was developed hot on Gopher's heels.

Gopher introduced the idea that you can explore online information by navigating through an organized index of menu items—links, in effect (see Figure 19.11). You can explore all of the information stored on Gopher servers the world over (most of which are in colleges and universities) by clicking your way through the menus and links in Gopherspace.
