Q&A

Q1:Is it really safe to give my email address to anyone?
A1: Well, it's safer than some other kinds of information you can send, such as your real name. And there are many good reasons to reveal your email address, such as signing up for a mailing list.

Still, if your email address falls into the wrong hands, you can be flooded with annoying junk email (called spam), or you might get weird or annoying messages from some online stranger. So the same watchwords apply: Never tell more about yourself than you have to, and be sure who you're dealing with.

You'll learn more about email privacy in Part IV, "Communicating with Email and Newsgroups."
