Observing Proper Netiquette

How you communicate with private friends in email is between you and your friends. But once you begin contributing to discussion groups—mailing lists and newsgroups—you're participating in a public forum, and have an obligation to follow a code of conduct that keeps the conversation pleasant and productive for all.

Netiquette—the unofficial code of online conduct—can be boiled down to the Golden Rule: Do unto others. As you gain experience, you'll begin to notice things others do that bug you, such as quoting too much or writing sloppily. Obviously, those are the things you must remember not to do yourself.
