Why Do I Need an Internet Provider?

The communications hardware and other requirements of a dedicated, full-time connection to the Internet cost thousands of dollars, and the annual leases for the data communications lines cost thousands more. The companies that offer Internet access all have their own costly, high-speed, 24-hour Internet connections. Those Internet connections have the capacity to support hundreds or thousands of individual Internet users.

Personal, day-to-day Internet users like you and me cannot afford our own full-time Internet connections; we must rent somebody else's connection. For whatever fee we pay our Internet provider, you and I buy the right to use our modems to call up the Internet provider's computers and tap into that Internet connection.
