Many companies choose merely to promote themselves online, but don't actually sell there. Others are committed to offering online every product and service they have .

Take care to choose a degree of online presence that you or your company can keep up with. Many companies overreach in their early forays online, deploying elaborate Web sites that they fail to update regularly and keep working smoothly. To establish a good online reputation, it's generally better to field a modest—but well-maintained—Web presence than to put up a state-of-the-art site and let it crumble.
