Part V: Beyond Browsing > Voice and Video Conferencing

Hour 17. Voice and Video Conferencing

With an Internet conferencing program, you can have a live conversation—very much like a telephone call—with anyone else on the Internet who uses the same conferencing program. Depending on what you pay for Internet service and how far away your caller is, conducting such "Internet telephone calls" may be substantially cheaper than making a long-distance telephone call because it costs you nothing beyond what you already pay for your Internet account. You can, in effect, make a one-hour call to France for free if your French friend has an Internet account and conferencing software.

But conferencing programs do more than just carry a conversation. You can have a text-based chat (like a chat client), draw and type messages on a collaborative whiteboard, and even add video to the conversation.
