A.1. Backup

Appendix A lists the keyboard shortcuts used with the Backup application.

Table A-1. Backup's keyboard shortcuts
Menu Item Keyboard shortcut Description
Backup (the application menu) About Backup None Opens a window that tells you what version (and build number) of Backup you're using.
Go to .Mac None Opens the .Mac web site (http://www.mac.com) in your default web browser.
Buy Storage None Takes you to the .Mac Upgrade page (http://www.mac.com/1/addstorage.html), which gives you options for purchasing more iDisk or Email storage space.
Buy Media None Opens the online Apple Store in your default web browser so you can purchase additional storage media (CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW).
Provide Backup Feedback None Takes you to a page on Apple's web site where you can send feedback to Backup's developers. You can use this form to submit things such as bug reports and feature requests.
Services None None of the items in the Services menu work with Backup, even if you select an item in the QuickPick list.
Hide Backup -H Hides the Backup window.
Hide Others Option-H Hides open windows for other applications.
Show All None Brings the Backup window to the front.
Quit Backup -Q Quits Backup. If you quit while performing a backup, you will need to start the backup over again. Additionally, the backup will become corrupt.
File Add None Adds a file or folder to the backup Items list.
Find None (not even the standard -F works) Opens a Find dialog that lets you search for files and folders that meet a certain criteria. Unfortunately, you cannot add these items to the backup Items list directly from the search results window. See the section Section 6.5.2.2 for more information on using the Find feature.
Show/Hide Info -I Opens the QuickPick list when you have an item selected.
Show Log -L Opens the log that keeps track of the backups you've performed.
Eject -E Ejects a CD or DVD, if one is in the disc tray.
Backup Now None Starts a backup; this is the same as clicking on the Backup Now button on Backup's window.
Edit Cut -X This option is grayed out and cannot be used.
Copy -C This option is grayed out and cannot be used.
Paste -V This option is grayed out and cannot be used.
Remove From List None Removes a selected item from the backup Items list.
Restore All QuickPicks None Select this menu item if you've removed one of the QuickPick packages from the Backup List and want to get it back.
Clear iDisk Backup Folder None Deletes all of the items in your iDisk's Backup folder. Even though you'll be warned before your backup data is deleted, you should think twice before you select this option; once you agree to remove your backup data, there's no going back.
Select All -A Selects all of the items in the backup list. Using this option with the QuickPicks list open will close the QuickPicks list and select all of the items in Backup's main window.
Check All Shift- -A Selects all of the items in the backup list.
Uncheck All Shift- -D Deselects all of the items in the backup list.
Special Characters None This menu item is irrelevant to using Backup.
View Back up to iDisk None Starts backing up the selected items to your iDisk.
Back up to CD None Starts backing up the selected items to CD.
Back up to Drive None Starts backing up the selected items to a specified external or networked drive.
Restore from iDisk None Starts the process of restoring data to your Mac from a previous backup to your iDisk.
Restore from CD/DVD None Starts the process of restoring data to your Mac from a previous backup to CD or DVD.
Restore from Drive None Starts the process of restoring data to your Mac from a previous backup to an external or networked drive.
Window Minimize -M Minimizes the Backup window to the Dock.
Close Window -W Simultaneously closes and quits Backup.
Bring All to Front None Since Backup only has one window, this menu item is pretty useless; if you can select this menu item, it already means that Backup is at the top of the window stack.
Help Backup Help -? Opens Backup's help file.
