The Perils of Internet Searching

One of our favorite descriptions of what it's like to search the Internet is offered by Clifford Stoll, veteran searcher and author of Silicon Snake Oil and The Cuckoo's Egg. By way of background, and to help you appreciate Mr. Stoll's formidable research skills, we should mention that The Cuckoo's Egg recounts how he used the Net to track down the notorious “Hanover Hacker”—a trail that also led to a KGB-backed spy ring. That was in the late 1980s, before most of the world had even heard of the Internet.
