Chapter 10. Yahoo! > Using Yahoo's Web Directory

Using Yahoo's Web Directory

As we've said before, when it comes to organizing the Web by topic, Yahoo has set the standard. All the major engines offer Web directories of some sort, often provided by third parties like the Open Directory or LookSmart. But Yahoo offers three advantages over most of its competitors:

  • You can simultaneously search both its human-compiled Web directory and a gigantic database of more than a billion Web pages, and the combined results will be presented to you in a well-organized and readable format.

  • You can easily avoid (or zero in on) business or shopping Web sites, or sites that are of regional interest, because Yahoo makes a distinction in its directory between commercial vs. non-commercial sites, and between sites that are of global interest vs. those that are only relevant to a specific geographic region.

  • If you find a category in the Yahoo directory that looks promising, you can search again within just that category to find the exact information that you're after.
