The Challenge of Full-Text Searching

Traditional databases like the electronic card catalog at your local library let you do field searches. If you're interested in the writer Kurt Vonnegut, for example, you can search for Vonnegut in the database's author field to produce a list of his books. Click on a title and all the relevant information about that book will be presented in familiar, card-catalog format (Figure 2.1).
