Chapter 6. Google

Good to Know

  • Created at Stanford in 1998, Google is one of the top-rated search sites, earning high praise for its simple interface, spot-on search results, and ad-free home page.

  • Google's database is the largest of all the leading search engines, with more than 1.2 billion Web pages.

  • Search results include matches from Google's gigantic database as well as the human-compiled Web directory created by the Open Directory Project.

  • Google is currently the only search engine that indexes the full text of PDF files and includes them in search results.

  • Boolean operators and other “power search” capabilities are fairly limited, but Google does such a good job of producing relevant results that it doesn't matter for most searches.
